Japan’s LCD TV shipments top CRTs in May

June 24, 2005 – Japan’s domestic LCD television shipments in May surpassed CRT (cathode-ray tube) TVs for the first time ever on a monthly basis, according to figures released Wednesday by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), said the Asia Pulse Businesswire.

LCD TV shipments reached 291,000 units, while CRT TVs totaled 240,000. With prices of LCD TVs plummeting, demand has shifted to these units. JEITA predicts that LCD TV shipments will exceed CRT TVs on an annual basis in 2006. But if shipments for LCD sets remain robust, the timeline could be pushed up to this year.

Color TV shipments inched up 2.6% to 560,000 units. LCD TVs grew by 74%, accounting for 52% of all color TVs, followed by CRT TVs comprising 43% and plasma sets taking up 5%.

Due to increased production of LCD TVs by manufacturers, prices have fallen by 20-30% on an annualized basis. Retail prices for LCD sets are approaching 10,000 yen (~US$92) per inch, which is said to be the benchmark for sales of such TVs to pick up.
